My Harley Davidson Stuff

Saddle Sore 1000 - SS1000

1000 miles in under 24 hours.

8th August 2009.....

 DONE !!!!

 1019 miles 7:00am Saturday - 3:45am Sunday

 20 hours - 45 mins

The idea of this challenge is to ride 1000 miles in under 24 hours straight.

Not easy, on my own, on a Sportster with a tiny fuel tank. 13 fuel stops....

The Day / The Ride/ The Fuel Stops....

Starting from the Crooklands garage at M6 Junction 36(under the 17 mark), at approx 7:10am This was the First Petrol receipt with time and date on, to verify start time and place.

8:57am Second petrol stop at Annandale Services (3), then up past Glasgow and Stirling to Doune Shell garage 10:28am (4), and then past Edinburgh.

A1 to Berwick-upon-Tweed Morrisons, fuel and a sandwich 12:51pm (5). Then down A1 to Newcastle and Angel of the North (6), and fuel at Durham 1:56pm (7).

A1(M) to Doncaster, fuel at Castleford Ferrybridge 4:04pm (8). Then onto the M1, fuel at Leicester 6:04pm (9). Join the M25 and fuel at South Mimms 7:25pm (10).

Around the M25 clockwise, to Clacket Lane services 9:11pm (11). Onto Reading and the M4, fuel at Membury West Services 10:48pm (12).

This is when fatigue started to set in... It started to become quite cold and lonely, thumping up the motorway late at night.

Across to Bristol and up the M5 to fuel at Michael Wood Services 11:55pm (13). Right up the M5, join the M6 to Fuel at Hilton Park services at Birmingham, Sunday 1:19am (14).

Continue up the M6 to Charnock Richards services for fuel 2:37am (15), then back to Junction 36 for last fuel receipt at Crooklands Garage 3:29am (17) then home at 3:40am.

Making unofficial total, home to home at 1019 miles in 20 hours and 45 minutes... MS AutoRoute planned at 1016.5 miles in 18 hours and 43 minutes, so mileage is not far off, and the 2 hours difference is all the stops and breaks..

Official by times fuel receipts, first to last garage, 1013 miles

Odometer on bike as 1015.2 miles....

17th August 2009...  All the logs, witness reports and receipts are in at I.B.A UK for full verification.

7th October 2009...- Verification Approved,  mileage was 1004,  Phew !!  So now Officially a member of the IBA ... Received my certificate, IBA number, patch, and licence plate backing.

Anybody else done this lately, let me know....

This is the David Stirling Memorial, on the B824 to Doune from the A9/M9 roundabout. He is the founder and creator of the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) in the Second World War. This was later to become the Special Air Service Regiment , The SAS. So I had to stop for 5 minutes..

Doune Castle,  where most of the Castle scenes from the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail were filmed. So I had to stop and have a picture of that as well.

"Ello, Ooo is it !!"

So, due to traffic problems, and loads of petrol stops, I did not have time for photos, just these ones at the beginning of the ride..   My mind was on other things, bad back, sore neck, aching legs, tingling hands, throbbing head, hunger, tired....

This is the mileage on the bike when I finished. What a feeling when it clocked over 1000 !!!

This is the smallest motorcycle run that the Iron Butt do, so next year, might do the BB1500, Bun Burner..... or the End to End...

 ABC's of Touring

These are the basic guidelines, there are more rules than just this, and a form to fill in with all the details on, but signs, bike, rider and mag have to be in  the photo.

2006 ABC....

In 2006, hang on, I'll find out, lost the magazine with the results in.... but I think I got 27 points, some of my photos were lost in the developers. You have to have old fashioned photos, not digital.

2007 ABC....

In 2007,  placed  94th world wide - 24th in the UK with 30 points.

Did not do the 2008 ABC as the organisers changed the rules, they are back as normal for 2009...

2009 ABC....

After doing the SS1000 this year, I decided to get myself a TopBox for the bike. Already had the sissy bar and rack, just bought a cheapbox, removed the sissy bar, and there is now somewhere for my sandwiches and stuff, rather than a ruck sack, which is a pain in big heavy leathers. Also, going a bit further to get my points. I should have 36 this year, enough for a patch, I hope....
